The 5th Biennial Conference

2017 EWTF Conference
2017 is the quincentennial of the Protestant Reformation and provides a compelling occasion to reflect on the legacy of issues it has left behind and their contemporary significance. Started as a reform movement within the Roman Catholic Church, it soon led to the formation of confessional churches within a divided Christianity while also stimulating the renewal of Catholicism in the form of the Roman Catholic Reformation. The Protestant Reformation is a pivotal event in the history of Christianity, and the momentous issues it raised then still echo in different forms today, demanding new interpretations and solutions in the changing circumstances of the globalizing world. The quincentennial occasion challenges us to review some of the issues of doctrine and church reform that divided the churches then and reflect on their significance for today. The remaining issues include the doctrine of justification by faith alone, the relation between divine grace and human responsibility, the theological significance of the denomination, the always-necessary reform of the churches, and above all the manifold challenges of globalization. To address some of these legacies is the aim of this conference.
The conference is soliciting papers that will address some major aspects of the Protestant Reformation and its contemporary significance. The Executive Committee of the East-West Theological Forum cordially invites you to submit papers for the main and parallel sessions. The paper must be written in English and presentable in 30 minutes, which will be followed by a 15 minute discussion. The deadline for the proposal is by March 15th and the complete paper by April 30th.
